Azelastine Hydrochloride is the non-proprietary name for an antihistamine, useful in preventing or alleviating mild to severe rhinitis. It is effective in treating both seasonal and perennial rhinitis.
It's possible to buy Azelastine Hydrochloride as a nasal spray or as eye drops. Products containing Azelastine Hydrochloride are sold under a wide variety of brand and generic names, including Astelin, Optivar, Rhinolast, and many others.
Azelastine Hydrochloride is generally considered safe for patients age 6 and up. In some places it's approved for those 5 and up. Parents are discouraged from buying Azelastine Hydrochloride for younger patients without explicit doctor approval. Likewise effects on unborn or nursing babies are unknown; women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not buy Azelastine Hydrochloride without first discussing potential risks with a doctor.
How It Works
Azelastine Hydrochloride inhibits histamine production in the body. Administered directly to the nasal passages or eyes, it stops production right in those areas most affected by allergens. Patients buy Azelastine Hydrochloride to prevent:
Administration does matter to some extent; those who primarily have their eyes affected will benefit most from eye drops, while those who have primarily nasal issues will benefit most from nasal spray. The nasal spray does benefit eyes and other areas to some extent, while the eye drops are unlikely to significantly benefit anything other than eyes.
In both cases Azelastine Hydrochloride will provide little benefit to those suffering allergy-induced breathing impairment, such as asthma.
Azelastine Hydrochloride Eye Drops
Eye drops can be used prior to allergen exposure to prevent symptoms altogether, or may be used after allergies have started, to minimize or eliminate them. In the latter case relief starts after about 15 minutes, though it may take a few doses before symptoms are completely gone. Azelastine Hydrochloride packages usually include a dropper, often built-in.
In ages 6 and up treatment is the same:
Common side effects associated with eye drops are mild eye irritation and temporary blurred vision. If the dropper is contaminated, such as by touching it before washing hands, eye infection may develop.
Azelastine Hydrochloride Nasal Spray
The nasal spray can also be used prior to allergen exposure to completely prevent symptoms, or after exposure to alleviate existing symptoms. Again relief begins after about 15 minutes, and it may take a few doses for full relief. Patients who buy Azelastine Hydrochloride nasal spray will experience some relief of eye symptoms as well, though, depending on severity, the nasal spray on its own may not be enough to fully relieve them.
In ages 6 and up:
Rarely a doctor may advise patients age 12 and up to administer two sprays per nostril twice per day. Doctor instructions should always be followed.
Side effects include mild nasal irritation, sneezing, and occasionally nosebleeds.
